What Lies Ahead

We’ve teased here and there what our plans are, but we never really showed you a roadmap of what we have planned for us and for you. We’re going to change that today. Read on to find out what lies ahead!

We prepared a little visual roadmap for you, feel free to share it with friends and the community.

Old and New

Old Cards With A New Livery

We introduced starter decks when we released our core set last year in November. Whilst they are great as digital and print@home material, we really want to get them printed so that new players can order a deck, unpack it and start playing. There’s so much amazing art on our cards, they have to be printed. We’ll most likely release them not all at once but every set once the art is finished.

By the way, we’re always looking for new volunteers who would like to support our art department! So if you’re interested in getting your art on our cards, or know of friends and family who are artists and would like to help us out, please do not hesitate to reach out to us! We believe in diversity in style, so your style will most probably fit. Just look at all our cards. So many different artists, so many different styles. And we love each and every one of them!

Hida Amoro

Once we have all our art complete, we will release the Emerald Core Set as a physical box, too. It will contain a play set of each clan specific card (except provinces and strongholds), two copies of each neutral province, and two play sets of each neutral card. This will allow new players to buy the box and build two different decks with (nearly) no limitation, aside from splash cards. We’re currently in talks with Azao Games how we can make such a box possible, that you can also use to store all the cards in. We’ll see what we can do for DriveThruCards.

A New Format

We’re going to release a new format on EmeraldDB and Jigoku: Sanctuary Format. Named after the island that our Clans landed on, this format will only allow cards that were released by Emerald Legacy. We will also consider something like a rotation mechanism, but more on that in the release announcement of said format. We believe that this format will make it easier for new players to start with the game and offer new challenges for long-time players.

The Test of the Coral Champion

We’re having two big tournaments this year, one that was won by the Crab and one that is yet to be held, the Test of the Coral Champion, our Kotei in Seattle. Registrations are open and we have 3 participants so far. If you’re undecided, come and register, it will be a lot of fun and you will get loads of loot! The winner is allowed to choose the new Coral Champion from their ranks.

Developing New Ways To Play

As I just mentioned in the paragraph above, the winner of each Kotei this year is allowed to choose a champion from their deck as the new Pearl/Coral champion. These two characters will get a special treatment, sort of an upgrade or experienced version, as they are now one of the Empress’ champions. Thus, the new effects will be reminiscent of the old character (to an extent) and also highlight the new role that they now have. We hope to release the two characters with the next set.

Which brings me to the next item on the roadmap, the next set. We can’t tell you any details, of course, but we can at least give you some information.

  • The next set is a cycle of four packs, and each pack will feature two different clans.
  • This new cycle is aimed at new players, specifically. The goal is to enable new players to pick up a pack, crack it open and start playing immediately against their friend, partner, or whomever they want to play with.
  • The cycle is an extension to our core set. If you purchase (or print) all four packs, you will have exactly one core set (3x clan cards, 6x neutrals), eight new cards per clan, and a bunch of new neutral cards.
  • We will also release a pack with only the new cards, for those that already have the core set.
  • The cards will be valuable and playable in Emerald Legacy format as well as in Sanctuary format.

Peer Through the Fog

There are a few things that we have planned, but not really planned out completely. We’re going to release a few “How to” videos, that will focus on the different clans, their different play styles, and some generally good ideas for playing the game.

Regarding organised play, we consider an ELO based discord league which will take both the amount of your matches and the rating of your opponents into account. The last item on the list is a “bring a buddy” kind of tournament, but that’s all we can say for now.

And that’s all for today. What do you think of our plans? What are your guesses regarding clan pairings? Let us know on Discord, Reddit, Facebook, or here in the comments!
